Today we focus on and find out about:

Sharon Wildman
Managing Director/Company Owner
Excel Tail Lift Services Limited

How did you get to where you are today?

The business roots was from my father who enabled us to purchase two vans 20years back in 2005 so we could go out and start servicing and repairs for ourselves.

Since that time I have worked to grow new customers and ensure we provide good quality and affordable services consistently.

Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are today?

We overcome the uncertainty of the pandemic, choosing the brave decision of working through supporting emergency transport and essential accessible care services.

Finally after managing to keep the business going and building confidence back I then faced a failed attempt to have the business sold from under me coupled with an attempt of an  unauthorised merger also trying to take away long standing customers to a competitor.

If so, how did you overcome them?

However, having some amazing support and excellent legal advice and guidance including that of my life-long accountant I managed to secure all the company shares and become sole owner and company director of the business. I went to market recruited two new highly experienced new engineers and went straight back at it to ensure the business would continue unscathed and stronger than ever.

We have diversified to support more than just accessible transport but also logistics, entertainment and the tourist industry.

I must admit I have also relied on my passion, my belief, hard work and a sprinkle of good fortune and by never giving up on what I know is a great business.

As a woman leading a small business in a predominantly male-dominated industry, I have successfully steered Excel through over two decades, including the challenges of the pandemic and changing market conditions, while continuing to deliver a high quality service. I am proud that we now support clients across the full spectrum of life from school transport to emergency services and end-of-life care, playing a vital role in maintaining the essential day to day mobility and accessibility for the people we serve.

What do you like about the bus, coach or community transport sector?

I love this sector as it provides a vital lifeline of accessibility to enable people to access essential services and enjoy a quality of life they deserve. Its a wonderful feeling to know you are not just running a business but also providing a service that is valued and appreciated by so many.

What does a typical day look like?

A typical day is speaking to my guys to ensure they have a well organised day planned ahead, scheduling work, ensuring services are maintained whilst also providing a responsive and  professional repair service when its needed most. I like to keep in touch with my customers and I always value and appreciate their feedback and the ongoing return back to us for business.

What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus, coach or community transport sector?

Go for it, it doesn’t matter how big or small the business is or what role you play but never hold back on chasing what may be possible. I have learnt that even in the most challenging times you can overcome and achieve what you aim for.

What has been your bus, coach or community transport sector career highlight?

It has to be finally being the full owner and company director of a great local business born of origin thanks to my father and still going today 2 decades on.

What three things could the bus, coach or community transport sector do to improve the industry for women?

Keep showcasing the success, support with training, networking events and real life lessons so more women can learn and succeed in their dreams and ambitions.

What changes have you seen since in the sector since you joined?

There are more business women leading and driving our sector to success and this is wonderful to see.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Still working, still delivering great service, growing the business with my great team and ensuring we are thriving to support us all and our families for the future.

Maybe the odd celebratory cocktail wouldn’t go a miss either…

Anything else you would like to share?

Just to say thank you to everyone that has been there for me throughout this journey, I love you all and you gave me strength and belief to succeed.
