Today we focus on and find out about:

Kathryn Cordey-Hanson
CEO
Proximity Coach Travel

How did you get to where you are today?

Myself and my husband (Matt) in November 24 decided to leave our very comfortable jobs – (myself a teacher for 20 years. ) to set up Proximity Coach Travel together. Matt has been in the coach industry for over 20 years. We started with a single lap top working from home , we soon discovered we needed an office and employees as it was growing faster than we predicted. We
now have five employees.

Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are today?

We have faced many challenges along the way. Moving to the office was a financial risk and to employ a member of staff was a big decision to make. As a married couple we also faced  challenges, separating work from home life.

If so, how did you overcome them?

We knew we had to take the leap in moving to our office for our own sanity if nothing else. Regarding taking on an employee was the best decision we made as we then grew even more.
Work/life balance – as we now have 5 amazing members of staff it makes taking time out much easier.

What do you like about the bus, coach or community transport sector?

I was pleasantly surprised how much of a community this sector is, welcoming all equally. I have had the pleasure of meeting lots of new people, who I class as friends. I have attended many events with Matt and these are great for networking but also great fun.

What does a typical day look like?

I am now part time, so I go to the gym ten arrive in work for 10:00. My first priority is to check in with each member of the team to make sure all is ok. I always want to promote a calm and happy work place, where everyone feels happy to come to work. My role involves all parts of the business- sales, speaking to customers and the finance side.

What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus, coach or community transport sector?

I would advise anyone to take the leap as it isn’t at all what you expect it to be.

What has been your bus, coach or community transport sector career highlight?

Being nominated for micro business of the year after trading for a little over 12 months. A huge achievement for myself and our great team.

What three things could the bus, coach or community transport sector do to improve the industry for women?

As a new person in this sector I don’t feel at the moment there is anything else. Personally I think I have had so many opportunities for get togethers, meetings, talks etc

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Hopefully retired!

Thank you for sharing Kathryn, what a great story!
