Avtar Kaur
Bus Driver

Tell us a little bit about your journey to becoming a bus driver

My journey in the industry started with a visit to the job centre 26 years ago. There was a leaflet on the table advertising recruitment for Bus Drivers for what was known as London United and now First Bus London. I enjoy driving and thought this is something I can do. I am so happy that I joined the industry and continue to enjoy driving buses. This job gave me the ability to buy my house and build on my freedom of life. I enjoy the customer service element of the job and look forward to coming to work every day.

How did you get to where you are today?

Although I enjoy driving buses I have worked hard to maintain my training and develop myself with all the changes that have taken place over the years within the industry. I have received support from the management and supervisory teams within the company which have aided a positive atmosphere and a happy work environment.

Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are today?

Life is a challenge in general every day. I take each day as it comes and any challenges, I see that it is the nature of life and there is a good reason and learning for every challenge.

What do you like about the sector? What inspired you to get involved?

I always enjoyed driving my car and that was the reason I took the step to become a bus driver and have never regretted the decision.

What did a typical day look like?

A typical day for me as a Bus Driver is wonderful I feel that the female increase in the work force over the years has been a big contributing factor. I feel that I have been able to express myself freely with likeminded people and built some beautiful friendships.

What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus, coach or community transport sector?

Advice I would give is that since CCTV has been on the buses and having Control Centres at a touch of a button it is much safer now than ever before. I always do late shifts and this is my preference – I do not feel unsafe at all.

What has been your bus, coach or community transport sector career highlight?

The highlight of my career is the friendships I have built up within the industry. This has not only supported me at work but also in my personal life and having the support at work from well trusted colleagues.

What three things could the bus, coach or community transport sector do to improvement the industry for Women?

1) Some better fixed duty times to support school drop off and pick up times. This would allow woman to have the flexibility to manage work and family life.
2) Customer service assistance on the buses so the driver can concentrate on the road.
3) Woman’s health and hormones are always changing and further support on this would be great for example better air con systems on the buses.

What changes have you seen since in the sector since you joined?

1) Safety is a major change that has taken place e.g. the CCTV and Control Centre systems
2) Technology has changed e.g. from taking cash we now have oyster cards
3) The buses are also more accessible for wheelchairs and push chairs
