Today we focus on and find out about:
Karen Taylor
Assistant Operations Manager
Go Ahead London
How did you get to where you are today?
I began as a bus driver and was promoted to a controller. In this role I was able to understand the business more and get to know my driving colleagues. I was then given the opportunity to cover the assistant operations manager role and I fell in love with the position.
Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are today?
I think the hardest thing is balancing being a full-time mum and a full-time committed manager.
If so, how did you overcome them?
I have learnt to ensure when I am at work, I focus on what is important and what can wait, I was working too many hours which was affecting my home life, now, I prioritise and manage to complete my work in my normal working hours.
What do you like about the sector?
My colleagues. This role allows me to help others and I get to talk to different people every day.
What does a typical day look like?
Very busy usually, I feel at times that I am juggling several balls in the air. At times it can be overwhelming, like how it feels as a parent to small children. However, like it is at home, when the children are in bed, you have time to reflect and know you did a good job. That’s how I feel at work, I leave to head home and feel I made a difference today. That’s probably why I have been here for over 20 years.
What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus and coach sector?
Use all your transferrable skills. Don’t lose hope and if you want to achieve your goal you will.
What has been your bus or coach sector career highlight?
Introducing the POD to our company. Removing the stigma of mental health.
What three things could the Bus and Coach sector do to improvement the industry for Women?
Go-Ahead London are continually reviewing areas to improve and would be useful across the whole of Bus and Coach.
Assist with childcare issues more.
Pay more Maternity pay.
Flexible/stretchy/cooler uniform to allow for changes in the body.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Hopefully still enjoying coming to work everyday as I do now.
Thank you Karen for sharing — your journey is a real source of inspiration!
