Tell us a little bit about your career journey

I first started in 2021 after passing my test in the May. I went on to work for 2 bus companies before joining the coaches in November of 2024.

How did you get to where you are today?

I have worked on the buses for 3 ½ years, which gave me the driving experience to move onto the coaches.

Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are today?

It was particularly tough on the buses some days, especially when you are running late and the one in front was missing.

If so, how did you overcome them?

Take everything with a thick skin, and let it go over your head.

What do you like about the sector? What inspired you to get involved?

I originally wanted to be a lorry driver, but a local company was funding the licence to drive a bus, and then I never left as I really enjoy the social aspect with passengers, and the difference in work every day. No day is the same while driving either a bus or coach, and that is something I really like about the job.

What did a typical day look like?

I do my school run in a morning, before parking up for breakfast. Then I either have a private hire or spend time cleaning my coach inside and out. Following that, I do a college run and then a return for my school run. On a weekend I do private hires which take me all over and I really enjoy driving to new places.

What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus and coach sector?

Do it! Some days can be challenging, but overall, it’s my favourite job I’ve ever had.

What has been your bus or coach sector career highlight?

Being able to make the step from service work on the buses to the private coach work.

What three things could the Bus and Coach sector do to improvement the industry for Women?

More access to toilets, access to sanitary products if needed in depot toilets and facilitate shifts to work around childcare if needed for the driver.

What changes have you seen since in the sector since you joined?

A lot more younger women coming through the door. I started at 25, and turn 30 next year and it’s nice to see more ladies start the job.

Anything else you would like to share?

I’ve been incredibly lucky in the companies I’ve worked for that I’ve never felt at a disadvantage for being a woman, the men and women alike that I’ve worked with have all been amazing, and I’ve made some true friends for life.
