Today we focus on and find out about:
Michelle Clayson
Head of Group Marketing & Communications
The Coach Travel Group
How did you get to where you are today?
It’s a long story, but I first dipped my toes into the Marketing world working at BP plc in 2002. From there, I went on to gain my CIM Professional Certificate in Marketing. Over the past 20+ years I’ve gained extensive experience in predominantly male-dominated industries, and through continuous career progression, here I am today!
Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are today?
Yes, I faced significant challenges starting in 2014 when my son began school and was diagnosed with Autism, ADHD and Global Development Delay in 2015.
How did you overcome then?
Finding a balance with work and home was impossible and my priority was my son, so I had to make the tough decision to leave my role as Marketing Manager at Travis Perkins plc. I then went to work at my son’s school so I could still work but be there for him when he needed me. In 2018, when he moved to a SEN school and was in a good routine, I decided it was time to get back to what I loved the most and joined the coach industry as Marketing Manager for Readybus.
What do you like about the sector?
What I like most about the coach travel sector is the potential for innovation and growth as a sustainable, accessible transport solution.
What does a typical day look like?
A typical day for me starts with reviewing my emails, followed by a brief stand-up meeting with my team to discuss the day’s goals and current projects, I then review progress, collaborate with other departments such as sales to align strategies with goals and oversee the development and creation of marketing activities. I also meet with suppliers and partners to discuss projects.
What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus and coach sector?
Do it! The bus and coach sector offers a rewarding and fulfilling career with a wide range of role beyond driving such as engineering, operations, sales, marketing and customer service. And as the sector evolves there is a growing recognition of the value that diversity brings. By stepping into this sector, you can contribute to the progress and have a great career.
What has been your bus or coach sector career highlight?
The standout highlight of my career in the bus and coach sector has been working on the formation of The Coach Travel Group. Seeing the group come to life and witnessing it’s positive impact on the sector so far, has been really rewarding.
What three things could the Bus and Coach sector do to improvement the industry for Women?
- Increased visibility and representation of women in all roles across the sector
- Implement mentorship programs to support women entering or re-entering the industry and want career progression
- Offer work/life balance programmes such as flexible working
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Still on my journey in the bus and coach sector, contributing to the development, growth and awareness of the transport solutions available to the market. I also want to pass for a category D license and CPC to further my understanding of the industry!
