Today we focus on and find out about:

Nicola Stockdale
Apprentice Bus Driver
Stagecoach

How did you get to where you are today?

Raising 4 children, mainly as a single parent, I had to choose jobs that fitted into the school routine, rather than a career I really wanted.

Now my youngest child is 16, I decided to look for a job role that could take me to retirement. The opportunity of training, while being paid, was also important to me, as I had financial obligations to maintain. Stagecoach offered me everything I wanted and more, including a level two apprenticeship scheme, so I jumped at the chance!

Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are today?

Yes, I was challenged mentally and physically.
At the more mature age of 51, I struggle with perimenopause symptoms. Brain fog is a big challenge to overcome. Part of being a bus driver is to memorize routes. I find this particular  challenging. I also struggled with not being able to go to the toilet for long periods of time, especially when on a heavy flow period.

Also, the role of a bus driver is often down graded as a menial job. Actually, it is one of the most responsible roles in society. Driving someone else’s loved one, children, elderly and vulnerable people every day requires extraordinary courage and mental resilience. I have become much more resilient since starting this job.

If so, how did you overcome them?

I remember why I applied for this job. I wanted financial stability. Security for my family, and I want to inspire future generations of girls to break the patriarchy by challenging preconceived ideas about a woman’s role in society.

What do you like about the bus, coach or community transport sector?

Driving a bus is exhilarating. It feels empowering every time I sit in the driver’s seat. I love the independence I get from the role, with the chance to socialise with other colleagues on my break time.

What does a typical day look like?

Every day is different. I never know what is around the corner. It could be a family going on a day out or an elderly lady in a mobility scooter.

What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus, coach or community transport sector?

The first few weeks will be tough, you will dream about driving a bus and taking a wrong turn! It will get easier every day. DONT STOP! IT GETS BETTER. It’s so worth the effort in the end.

What has been your bus, coach or community transport sector career highlight?

Getting feedback from my wonderful customers. People are so kind and friendly, if you just smile and say ‘Good morning, how are you today?’

What three things could the bus, coach or community transport sector do to improve the industry for women?

Better toilet facilities, while out on the road.
Lack of physically strength can be an issue at times.
More encouragement to progress to management roles.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

I would like to deliver classroom style training to new recruits in the bus industry. I have a passion to transform customer care, into ‘Human Experience’. I believe we all need more kindness
and compassion. I also care passionately about safeguarding, diversity and equality.
