My name is Justine May, I am a Senior Operations Manager for National Express. I am currently managing three sites, which operate National Express’s A services from Stansted Airport and the Long Stay/Mid Stay car parks at Stansted, which are operated on behalf of MAG (Manchester Airport Group).
I initially heard about the LEAD programme via LinkedIn, where a webinar was being advertised discussing the programme content. I was interested in the three core modules which were explained to us and thought, “This is really something that I would like to participate in,” as it seemed very different from previous leadership courses I had completed. I felt it would allow me to network with like-minded women and expand on my leadership skills.
What the LEAD Programme Involved
- Ian and Shireen are the facilitators of the LEAD programme and they bring an energy to the course that enables everyone to engage. The course is set in modules, starting with three core modules: foundation, self-awareness and brand. Everyone is encouraged to contribute, and listening to people’s experiences can be very empowering.
- A bonus to the LEAD programme is that you have three sessions with an executive career coach. This is one of my favourite parts of the programme as you get to expand on the course content and re-explore your goals, both personally and professionally.
- Some of my highlights (there are many) are the guest speakers. The women who have been guest speakers are truly inspirational. You leave these sessions with a lot to reflect on. Listening to these women who have worked within highly male-dominated arenas to then become senior leaders despite all the challenges is more than just motivational, it puts a fire in your belly.
Personal Impact and Key Takeaways
- One of the many things LEAD has given me is a new sense of purpose. We do not always acknowledge or recognise when we have become “stuck in a rut.” I have rediscovered and reset myself and feel that I am moving towards my goals with a far more positive mind-set.
- You do not realise when you begin the course that Ian and Shireen are mentoring you throughout. The knowledge and experience they bring with them is pivotal to this course being an absolute success.
- I think one of the biggest changes for me has been consciously adapting my leadership approach, slowing everything down and not rushing my decisions. We are in an industry that can make us work in a very reactive way at times; I believe LEAD has allowed me to look through a different lens.
Advice to Future Applicants
- If you are serious about personal growth and development, then you need to apply. This course will give you the tools to rediscover yourself and, in my belief, make positive change professionally and personally.
- If you are unsure about applying – DO NOT BE! You will be introduced to a cohort of women who have the same aspirations, stories and struggles that you may have experienced or are experiencing. It is a safe place where you will feel empowered, encouraged and most definitely supported.
Closing Reflections
Since starting the LEAD programme, I have been given a wider area of responsibility within my organisation and feel that I have been able to show what I am capable of doing. This is now being acknowledged by my senior team. I am also receiving very positive feedback from my immediate team who have stated that my outlook is so positive and that they feel they have been on the LEAD journey with me.
I would not have been able to experience this journey if it was not for the WiBC Board having the faith to sponsor me. The support that has been given, I will be forever thankful for. Thank you, thank you and thank you again.
For those of you considering applying, as said – please do. However, to really gain from the LEAD programme I would advise you to be completely honest and transparent with yourself. Be prepared to ask yourself some hard questions. Make time to put the work in (Ian and Shireen will help you with this) and do not be afraid to ask questions – there will always be answers and support for you. Good luck and enjoy. You are going to love it!
