Yasmin Norris
Coach Driver
DJ Coaches
How did you get to where you are today?
I passed my test back in February 2021 and went straight into the buses. I didn’t enjoy driving the buses so gave coach driving a go… and I love it!!
Did you experience any challenges getting to where you are today?
Being told how hard the tests were… but I worried for no reason, the tests are a lot easier than I thought. A lot of panicking for no reason!
If so, how did you overcome then?
I made sure I learnt everything from the learning materials to feel prepared for the tests. Even downloaded a theory test app on my phone and practised every chance I had. It paid off as I got 100% on my theory!
What do you like about the sector?
My favourite part of the sector is driving the coaches, especially down roads or turning around where you would never think a coach could go. Always makes me feel proud of myself when I’ve completed a tricky manoeuvre!
I also enjoy talking to the customers. I do a lot of cruise work and its always interesting talking to the passengers, finding out where they’re from, what they think of London etc.
Driving abroad is another thing I love about this job… I get to drive over Europe and visit all these new places I would never think to go myself.
What does a typical day look like?
The day always starts with doing a vehicle check, making sure its safe to be out on the road, them making my way to the pick up. This could be school runs, private hire jobs or cruise tours/transfers.
Return to the yard at the end of the day and clean the coach ready to go again the next day.
What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the bus and coach sector?
Just go for it! Everyone I’ve worked with at DJ Coaches has been very supportive and helpful.
What has been your bus or coach sector career highlight?
The highlight of my career so far has got to be driving abroad for ski trips… I got to see views and places I never knew existed!
What three things could the Bus and Coach sector do to improvement the industry for Women?
Maybe school visits/open days for young children. On school swims/trips, even young kids are surprised to see a female driver. It would be a good chance for them to see that women can do the job too!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Still driving coaches for DJ Coaches, visiting new places and exploring.
